Basic Drum tutorial by El Blanco
Part 1 - The stock techno beat

Samples from the Weazel collection
1-6 Tr-909 samples.

---Basic builing blocks---

Pattern 000
Basic tr-909 bass drum techno beat.
Notice that the drum hits on every beat. It's pretty boring, but it's a
start.

Pattern 001
a little more fancy of a rhythm.
Every second measure a beat is laid down on the half-beat. This adds some
variety.

Pattern 002
Pattern 001 with a bass drum fill at the end. Notice the q (retrig
effect). Crescendo (rising) added to the last two retrigged notes too
"smooth" the sound over.

Pattern 003
Added the tr-909 open hihat sound. Notice that it falls on the half beat
(similar to the way the bass drum did in pattern 001). This is nice
however it lacks some variety.

Pattern 004
Added tr-909 closed hihat sound on the beat. This gives the beat
something
of an "alternating rhythm" sound.

Pattern 005
Added second set of tr-909 closed hihat sounds one tick off of the beat.

Pattern 006
Spiced up pattern 005's closed hihat section by removing some of the
previously added tr-909 closed hihat sound.

Pattern 007
Added tr-909 claps every two beats, this is an important element, one
which helps to finalize the beat. At this point the most basic techno
rhythm is pretty much finished. All thats really left is some variety
which you will see in the next few patterns.

---Variety section---

These are some variations too pattern 007 that you can use to "enhance"
the beat.

Pattern 008
Variation 1
Notice the addition of two claps around the first beat. This is a fairly
stock variation but adds a little bit of nice rhythmic value.

Pattern 009
Variation 2
Replaced claps with 909 snare. Notice the D0C command. This is a quick
volume ramp down (decrescendo). I used this to "tighten" up the sound of
the snare. Take them out and see how they tend to "ring", this causes some
rhythmic loss. Which is why I used the effect.

Pattern 010
Variation 3
Used two more channels to echo the origional clap part. This is neat
effect, one which is used often. Of course it could be done in just the
one channel but I opened it up for illustration. This has some effect of
making the beat "continuous" and may cause the listener to become "lost"
in the beat, which is a good thing in this case.

Pattern 011
Variation 4
This one uses the variation 1 with a swing beat. Notice the A command.
By combining two different speeds setting a "swing" effect can be created.
Try not to make your swing too big (eg. A09 A03) as it can cause the sound
to be "sloppy". You hear this kinda swing alot in club music.

Pattern 012
Variation 5
Not much different here from the Variation 4. Added the snare every second
beat. This helps enhance that part of the beat.

Pattern 013
Variation 6
This is the invers of variation 5, with the snare as the main percussive
force and the clap as the enhancer. This is good for a change of pace
every so often in the song (as maybe a bridge part). This probably won't
do as the main rhythm as it tends to get annoying after awhile.

Pattern 014
Variation 7
This one includes a cymbal crash at the beginning of the pattern. Use this
one at the beginning of part (melody, bridge etc.) Notice I set the NNA to
continue as I didn't want the cymbal to get cut off.

Pattern 015
Variation 8
This one has a long snare fill at the end, this is particularly effective
right before a key change or a bridge. Notice the use of the retrig to
keep the fill from becoming boring.

Pattern 015-014
Variation 9
This is a good example of combining two previous variations.

Pattern 016
Variation 10
This is the last variation, it is based on variation 4, but with the snare
added as a rhythm enhancer. Notice the lower volume of the snare, this
keeps it in the background (where it belongs).

That's it for this tutorial, hope it was at least somewhat informative.
Let me know if you'd like to see more, I expect to make more similar to
this, contact me at

About the samples: As far as I know, these samples are PD and can be used
by everyone.

For the future:
I expect to do some weird rock rhythms, misc other beats, hand tracked
drum loops (breakbeats) and some hip-hop/rap rhythms.

Mega greetz to Scorpion and Cardiac for getting me to do this :)

other misc greetz to the crew of #trax and Kombo and 3stf.
